Catholic Charities Counseling and Adoption Services (CCCAS) is pleased to announce that Mayor Schember recently visited our refugee department to present special proclamations to our current refugee clients. This event underscored the city’s dedication to supporting new immigrants as they begin their new lives in Erie.
During the visit, Mayor Schember addressed the group of refugees, recognizing their bravery and emphasizing Erie’s commitment to fostering a supportive community. Each refugee was honored with a proclamation acknowledging their strength and marking the start of their new chapter in our city.
In addition to the Mayor’s visit, the event was further enriched by the presence of several local police officers. They provided valuable insights into local laws and regulations, which are crucial for helping new community members understand their rights and responsibilities. The officers answered numerous questions, offering clarity on various legal matters and ensuring that refugees feel informed and secure in their new environment.
Among those honored were Ahmed, who fled conflict with his family, and Chilumba, who spent over 30 years in a refugee camp in Zambia who is now seeking safety and opportunity. Both expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, noting how it symbolizes a warm welcome and hope for a brighter future in Erie.
The collaborative efforts between CCCAS, the city government, and local law enforcement highlight our shared commitment to making the transition process as smooth and supportive as possible.
CCCAS remains dedicated to providing comprehensive support to refugees, including orientation programs and a welcoming environment. For more information about our services or to get involved, please visit our website or contact us directly.
We extend our thanks to Mayor Schember and the local police officers for their support and to everyone who helps make Erie a welcoming place for all.
