CCCAS Refugee Clients Experience Enriching Library Tour

In a recent initiative to integrate community services and educational resources into the Cultural Orientation series, CCCAS’s Refugee Resettlement Services coordinated a successful library tour for their clients. The event, organized by Sarah Speir, Ph.D., Cultural Orientation & ESL Education Coordinator, highlighted the Blasco Library's extensive resources and support services.
The tour, guided by Alyssa Johnson, ECPL Outreach Services Manager, provided an engaging exploration of the library’s offerings. Alyssa led the clients through the various areas, including the Idea Lab, Teen and Children’s sections, and the World Language Resources.

The Idea Lab was a particular highlight, featuring a range of equipment from woodworking tools to bike repair kits. Clients were shown and had activities demonstrated to them such as making button pins with stickers or fabric and/or using the laser cutter to make small items with them to take, or items from the 3D printer. The array of tools and the opportunity to participate in creative projects impressed many, showcasing the library’s commitment to fostering innovation and learning.
The tour also covered the library’s expanding collection of language learning resources and the popular Teen and Children’s areas. Clients learned about children’s story hours and other family-oriented programs, which were well-received by parents in the group. Additionally, the computer lab was introduced, demonstrating the digital resources available to support various learning needs.

The circulation and library staff assisted clients in processing their library card applications, which were met with great enthusiasm. The support provided by CCCAS staff members and interpreters Faris and Masooma, along with logistical assistance from CCCAS refugee employees Hassan and Oscar, ensured that the tour was both informative and smoothly executed.
This visit is part of a broader effort by CCCAS to incorporate community services into the Cultural Orientation curriculum, helping refugees navigate their new environment and access valuable resources. The positive feedback from the clients reflects the success of this initiative in fostering a sense of belonging and enhancing their new community experience.
